Guimaras Island, located between Panay and Negros islands in the Philippines, is a tropical paradise known for its pristine beaches and world-famous sweet mangoes. The island was once a sub-province of Iloilo but became a regular province in 1992. Comprising a mainland and clusters of small islands, Guimaras offers a variety of activities, from water sports and ecotourism to exploring historical sites and participating in cultural festivals. It’s a must-visit destination for a blissful blend of rural tourism and relaxation.
Guimaras is an island province in the Philippines that was originally settled in 1581 by Gonzalo Ronquillo de Peñalosa, the Spanish governor of the Philippine Islands. The settlement aimed to Christianize the island’s native population and established villages called Nayup and Igang under the patronage of Saint Peter the Apostle and Saint Anne, respectively.
Over time, Guimaras became a sub-province of Iloilo until it gained full provincial status on 22 May 1992, after a plebiscite was conducted to ratify its conversion as a regular province, as per Section 462 of R.A. 7160. Following this, Emily Relucio-Lopez became the first Governor of the province, appointed by President Fidel V. Ramos.
An agricultural province in the Philippines with a focus on crops such as palay (rice), coconut, mangoes, vegetables, as well as livestock, poultry, and fishing. The province’s major industries include tourism, fruit processing (particularly mangoes), coconut processing, fish farming, handicrafts making, mining, quarrying, and lime production.
Guimaras is famous for its sweet mangoes, and approximately 50,000 mango trees are planted on the island. The mangoes from Guimaras are renowned for their quality and sweetness and are even served at prestigious places like the White House and Buckingham Palace. The province celebrates its agricultural heritage with an annual event called The Manggahan Festival, also known as the Mango Festival. The festival showcases the variety of mangoes produced on the island and features various mango-based products like dried mangoes, jam, and other delicacies.
